Beginning with Yarra Junction Estate in 1999 and growing to include a second vineyard and become Mandala Wines in 2006, the Smedley family now has two separate Yarra Valley sites under vine. Both produce varietals that excel in the region; the Dixons Creek site is home to a mix of classic varietals, while the Yarra Junction vineyard was carefully selected for premium pinot noir production.
The 10 acre Yarra Junction vineyard was planted to four Burgundian pinot noir clones in 1999. With clay-loam volcanic mix soil and the characteristic warm days and cool nights of the Upper Yarra, the site is ideal for pinot noir and produced Mandala’s first Single-Site wine in 2006: ‘The Prophet’ Pinot Noir. The Dixons Creek site – producing chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon, merlot and shiraz – was purchased by the family in 2006 and has undergone extensive re-planting and development to become the home of Mandala Wines.
Mandala Wines is led by owner and managing director Charles Smedley, who has over 26 years experience in the wine industry and extensive experience across Australia, Europe and Asia. Charles also oversees the winemaking team, motivated by his passion for the industry and his dream of producing the elusive ‘perfect’ wine. He considers it a privilege to live and work in the Yarra Valley, and continues to grow and develop Mandala Wines both nationally and overseas. Mandala’s vineyard manager, Julian Parrott, has been part of the team since 2007. He has 13 years’ experience growing wine-grapes in the Yarra Valley, driven by his love of life outdoors and the challenge of meeting each season as it comes.
The Mandala kitchen is headed by Luca Radaelli, who joined the team in 2012. His main love is the cuisine of his Northern Italian home, but he also brings a passion for learning and new techniques to his work. He began his training while still at school in Italy, but has since expanded his career across the globe with influences from his time in France, America and Thailand evident in his style.
Mandala Wines produce an Estate range and a Single-Site range of cool climate wines from their two Yarra Valley vineyard sites.
The Estate range comprises chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, rosé, pinot noir, shiraz, cabernet sauvignon and sparkling Blanc de Blancs. Made only when vintage conditions are in complete harmony, Mandala’s Single-Site range of wines are emblematic of a strong single-region, single-vineyard winemaking philosophy. The range now includes five varietal labels, each wine bearing its own icon representing a member of Mandala’s founding Smedley family: ‘The Compass’ Chardonnay, ‘The Prophet’ Pinot Noir, ‘The Matriarch’ Pinot Noir, ‘The Rock’ Shiraz and ‘The Butterfly’ Cabernet Sauvignon.
Mandala wines are available to purchase from the cellar door, to order online, and are stocked in independent wine retailers and restaurants in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth.
