At Rochford Wines – Yarra Valley, we specialise in high quality winemaking from two single vineyard sites with thirty five plus year old vines.
The approach of our Chief Winemaker, Marc Lunt, is drawn from the traditional Burgundian’s philosophy that “you don’t make wine; you merely accomany it from vine to bottle” and in his own words, “Produce the best fruit possible in the vineyard, handle the fruit gently to preserve fruit character, minimise extraction and allow the wines to express the inidividuality of the vineyard and each growning season with an assertive edge displaying healthy acidity in a cool year and ripe fruit expression in a warm year.”
Our Viticulturist, John Evans, believes the success of our wines come from “right site, right clones” and is firmly aligned to the practice of “grasses under vines” to ensure the purest of organic matter being put back into the soil.
Originally established in 1985 and known as ‘Yarra Vale’ vineyard, the Hill Road property was purchased in 1992 by the Cowan family and renamed ‘Eyton on Yarra’ until 2002 when it was purchased by current owner Helmut Konecsny. Helmut already had an established reputation for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the family-owned Romsey vineyard in the Macedon Ranges and therefore renamed the property ‘Rochford Wines’. In 2009, Helmut purchased a further 16 hectares in Briarty Road with thirty five plus year old vines and re-named it ‘Isabella’s Vineyard’ after his new daughter.
In 2010 Helmut sold his Macedon vineyard to allow him to concentrate all his energies on the Yarra Valley.
Since the purchase of the Hill Road property in 2002, Helmut has significantly developed the 26 hectare vineyard and winery and has a large restaurant, cellar door, retail shop, extensive natural ampitheatre and observation tower.
Owner Helmut Konecsny brings many skills to his business including significant time spent in Engineering which allows him a hands-on connection to the winery, strong sense of business acumen and a passion for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
Chief Winemaker Marc Lunt (appointed early in 2011) brings more than a decade of wine industry experience to Rochford beginning his winemaking career in the Barossa Valley, Marc moved to Melbourne in 2004 and worked in two of Yarra Valley’s iconic wineries before heading off to France and working over a six-year period in Bordeaux and Burgundy.
