SOUMAH (“so-ma”, meaning South of Maroondah Highway) is located at the foothills of picturesque Warramate Hills. At Soumah of Yarra Valley the Cellar Door and Trattoria are open 7 days and offer visitors a stunning view of Soumah’s vineyard and the rolling hills behind it. Being Northern Italian inspired, Soumah’s Trattoria serves traditional Italian cuisine carefully selected to match the Northern Italian wine styles.
It is known that ‘great wine is made in the vineyard’ and we set out to select an exact location that delivered every advantage of a cool climate, undulating topography and ancient soils. We then wanted to bring some focus to our endeavour. After being resident overseas for many years, we found the elegance & honesty of Northern Italian wines and food is what inspires us. So we found our hidden gem, located down a county lane in the dress circle Warramate foothills of the Yarra Valley. It is from here we set out to make wine with the charm of Northern Italy but the provenance of the majestic Yarra Valley.
At SOUMAH we have a ‘supervised control’ philosophy in relation to viticulture practices. The French call it lutte raisonnée or ‘reasoned fight’. The basis for this philosophy is to reduce the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides as these will eventually degrade the soil and make a weaker vine.
Brett Butcher – Managing Director & Vigneron
Heading up the family investment, Brett has been involved in the wine business all his life. Initially in the domestic and international five-star hotel, on-premise business and then onto his role in helping set up SOUMAH as a premium wine producer. “We focused on the Yarra for its acclaim in producing cool climate, clear varietal wines with savoury elegance. The SOUMAH raison d’etre is to support this fame with the definitive vineyard site, nurturing viticulture and a focus on quality over quantity.
Scott McCarthy – Chief Winemaker
Born into Viticulture with a family vineyard in Mildura. Started career in 1989 with Yalumba then went on to gain Worldwide experience in;

In 2005 Scott designed a new winery which formed a base to produce super premium wines.
Tim Knight – Viticulture Manager
Tim brings passion, enthusiasm and experience to the Soumah team, having worked on vineyards and wineries in NZ, Italy & Australia. Tim’s viticultural philosophy is to always be one step ahead of the plant and to be flexible as each season brings new challenges and experiences enabling him to deliver premium quality grapes for SOUMAH to create the elegance and provenance that has become our hallmark.
Tim Brown – Viticulture Consultant
Tim judiciously oversees the vineyard strategy with the philosophy of limiting input and letting the soil and varieties speak for themselves. Tim has lead a process of selecting the right rootstock for the right variety for the right vineyard aspect to create optimum vine balance and correct ripening profile.
Steven Worley – Distribution & Branding
A keen winemaker himself, Steve looks after export distribution for SOUMAH. He has built relationships in key markets ensuring our label is developing a loyal following internationally. Steven is also integral to our branding team ensuring we are focused and consistent with our message of quality and terroir.
Bela Rice – Sales Manager
Bela has over 25 years Wine Industry Experience, Selling, Consulting, Distributing and Educating. For the past 13 years before joining the Soumah team, he ran his own Wine Consultancy Business, ”Grape Ideas”. Wine has been his lifetime passion, and when not officially working there is every chance he will be dining out with friends, tasting and talking wine.
Dmitri Lazariuc – Sales Manager
Being a second-generation winemaker, Dmitri has been around a winery his entire life. Over the last 10 years he has gone from vineyards, cellars, barrel storages, anywhere where he could get his hands dirty with this glorious product we call wine to sales and marketing. At Soumah Dmitri is looking after local Yarra Valley distribution as well as utilising every tool possible to promote Soumah of Yarra Valley to the World.
Andy Patenall – Cuisine Manager
Andy, our culinary guru, has had over 18 years of experience in the hospitality industry and brings with him a plethora of knowledge on the Northern Italian cuisine (as well as just about everything else). Witty and charismatic by nature with a passion for wine, he is somewhat of a guiding light in the team that brings us all enlightenment through his cuisine.
