Sutherland Estate is a family-owned, boutique enterprise in the heart of the premium, cool climate Yarra Valley.
Our beautiful cellar door is open for wine tastings and sales, as well as being available for weddings and private functions.
Sutherland Estate has one of the most spectacular vineyard sites in Australia, and is (yet again) rated as a 5-star winery in the latest Halliday.
Sutherland Estate sits at the higher and cooler North-Eastern edge of the valley. The property is 110 acres, most of which is undisturbed, native bushland.
The original vineyard block was planted in 1994, to the usual Yarra Valley suspects (Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Cabernet). Further planting followed, including a couple of non-traditional varieties – Gewurztraminer and Tempranillo.
Built on the side of Daniel’s Hill, the cellar door commands breathtaking views of the vineyard, as well as across the Yarra Valley to the Dandenong and Warburton Ranges. It is an elegant, spacious and light-filled room, perfect for enjoying a glass of wine with a platter of cheeses. A large open fire warms in winter, a multi-level deck for the warmer days.
At Sutherland Estate it’s all hands on deck with the family business!
Ron Phelan designed and built the stunning cellar door.
Daughter Cathy Phelan met Angus Ridley whilst both were studying Wine Science at Charles Sturt University, and are they are now the wine makers.
The vineyard manager, Al, has been with Sutherland since 2008, and has a deep and intimate understanding of the vineyard. He takes a quiet pride in the quality of the fruit produced each year – and no one makes a great wine without great fruit. (He is also increasingly handy in the winery during vintage.)
We’ve even got the next generation showing plenty of interest and learning the ropes!
Every choice made (including the decision to do nothing) is made based solely on quality – the simple question is “what will make a more enjoyable wine, one that speaks to both its origins and winemaking journey?”
Our wines are only made from fruit grown on our property.
The vineyard is hand pruned. Depending on the season, shoot thinning, bunching thinning and/or leaf plucking may be employed. The fruit is always handpicked, and most varieties are 100% de-stemmed (save for the Pinot Noir, in some years). The reds are all hand-plunged in small, open, stainless steel fermenters, using indigenous yeasts and MLF, and are pressed (with our precious Europress) straight to French oak barrels. The oak is a mixture of 228 litre barriques, together with 400 and 500 litre puncheons.
Current wines available for tasting are:
- Sparkling Pinot Chardonnay (Methode Traditionnelle)
- Unwooded Chardonnay
- Pinot Noir
- Cabernet Sauvignon
- Sparkling Tempranillo
Our wines have received numerous awards and accolades.
We consistently receive high scores and wonderful reviews in Halliday’s annual book, and are once again rated a 5-star winery.
